What is Safeguarding?
‘Safeguarding means protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect’. Care Quality Commission 2022.
Legal safeguarding duties apply to all children and young people under 18.
Legal safeguarding duties further apply to an adult at risk. An adult at risk is someone aged 18 years or over 'who is, or may be, in need of community care services by reason of mental ill health or other disability, age or illness; and who is or may be unable to take care of him or herself, or unable to protect him or herself against significant harm or exploitation’. Safeguarding concerns can include, but are not limited to;
- Physical abuse
- Domestic violence or abuse
- Psychological or emotional abuse
- Financial or material abuse
- Risk of radicalisation (including environments that promote or spread radicalising ideologies)
- Modern slavery
- Discriminatory abuse
- Organisational or institutional abuse
- Neglect or acts of omission
- Self-neglect
